Quick answer
At Bermuda's residential electricity rate of BMD 0.499/kWh as of September 2025, a typical 3-ton air conditioner (SEER 14) costs about $1.28 per hour, $308 for a month at 8 hours a day, and roughly $1,925 a year with a summer cooling season (about 1,500 hours). That rate is 2.7 times the U.S. average of 18.31¢/kWh, and ranks #1 of 8 among the Caribbean countries we track.

Cost to run AC in Bermuda by system size
Central systems and ductless mini-splits are both sized in tons (1 ton = 12,000 Btu). A single bedroom mini-split is usually 0.75–1 ton; a whole house, 2–5 tons. Costs for SEER 14 at 49.90¢/kWh:
| System size | Per hour | Per month (8 hrs/day) | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 ton (18,000 Btu) | $0.64 | $154 | $962 |
| 2 ton (24,000 Btu) | $0.86 | $205 | $1,283 |

About electricity in Bermuda
Power in Bermuda is supplied by BELCO. Bermuda is subtropical rather than tropical, so most homes run air conditioning from late spring to early autumn rather than year-round.
Protect the AC you're paying to run
On island grids, outages, brownouts and voltage surges are part of normal life, and each one is a risk to an air conditioner's compressor and control board. A failed compressor can cost as much as a new unit, so a few inexpensive precautions are worth it:
- Voltage protection on every unit. A plug-in or hard-wired voltage protector cuts power when voltage goes too high or too low, then waits before restarting.
- A whole-house surge protector at the panel, installed by an electrician.
- A restart delay after outages. When power comes back, many units try to start at once; a delay of a few minutes protects the compressor.
- Generator sized for the AC. Compressors draw several times their running current at start-up; ask about a soft starter if you run AC on a generator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run AC per hour in Bermuda?
About $1.28 for a typical 3-ton air conditioner rated SEER 14, at Bermuda's residential rate of BMD 0.499/kWh (about 49.90¢ US, September 2025). A 1.5-ton unit, typical for one or two rooms, costs about $0.64 an hour.
How much does air conditioning cost per month in Bermuda?
Running 8 hours a day for 30 days, a 3-ton SEER 14 system uses about 617 kWh, or about $308 (BMD 308) at Bermuda's rate.
Is a high-efficiency air conditioner worth it in Bermuda?
Usually, yes. Replacing a SEER 10 unit with a SEER 16 saves about $1,010 a year at 1,500 cooling hours, and going from SEER 14 to SEER 20 saves about $577 a year. At island electricity prices, the extra cost of an efficient inverter system often pays back within a few years.
How we calculated this
Power draw (kW) = tons × 12,000 Btu/h ÷ SEER ÷ 1,000. Cost = kW × hours × rate. Rate: GlobalPetrolPrices.com, household electricity price (includes fuel adjustment, taxes and fees), September 2025. Island rates change with fuel prices, often monthly, so check your latest bill: divide the total by the kWh used to get your all-in rate. Cooling hours are our estimate for the climate.
