Quick answer
At the Cayman Islands' residential electricity rate of KYD 0.326/kWh (about 39.10¢ US) as of September 2025, a typical 3-ton air conditioner (SEER 14) costs about $1.01 per hour, $241 for a month at 8 hours a day, and roughly $3,016 a year (KYD 2,515) with year-round cooling (about 3,000 hours). That rate is 2.1 times the U.S. average of 18.31¢/kWh, and ranks #2 of 8 among the Caribbean countries we track.

Cost to run AC in the Cayman Islands by system size
Central systems and ductless mini-splits are both sized in tons (1 ton = 12,000 Btu). A single bedroom mini-split is usually 0.75–1 ton; a whole house, 2–5 tons. Costs for SEER 14 at 39.10¢/kWh:
| System size | Per hour | Per month (8 hrs/day) | Per year | Per year (KYD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 ton (18,000 Btu) | $0.50 | $121 | $1,508 | KYD 1,257 |

About electricity in the Cayman Islands
Power in the Cayman Islands is supplied by Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC). Fuel costs rose in 2026: CUC bills sent in July 2026 were about CI$50 higher for the average household using 1,158 kWh a month, roughly CI$0.04/kWh more than before, even after a government fuel-relief credit. (source)
Protect the AC you're paying to run
On island grids, outages, brownouts and voltage surges are part of normal life, and each one is a risk to an air conditioner's compressor and control board. A failed compressor can cost as much as a new unit, so a few inexpensive precautions are worth it:
- Voltage protection on every unit. A plug-in or hard-wired voltage protector cuts power when voltage goes too high or too low, then waits before restarting.
- A whole-house surge protector at the panel, installed by an electrician.
- A restart delay after outages. When power comes back, many units try to start at once; a delay of a few minutes protects the compressor.
- Generator sized for the AC. Compressors draw several times their running current at start-up; ask about a soft starter if you run AC on a generator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run AC per hour in the Cayman Islands?
About $1.01 (KYD 0.84) for a typical 3-ton air conditioner rated SEER 14, at the Cayman Islands' residential rate of KYD 0.326/kWh (about 39.10¢ US, September 2025). A 1.5-ton unit, typical for one or two rooms, costs about $0.50 an hour.
How much does air conditioning cost per month in the Cayman Islands?
Running 8 hours a day for 30 days, a 3-ton SEER 14 system uses about 617 kWh, or about $241 (KYD 201) at the Cayman Islands' rate.
Is a high-efficiency air conditioner worth it in the Cayman Islands?
Usually, yes. Replacing a SEER 10 unit with a SEER 16 saves about $1,584 a year at 3,000 cooling hours, and going from SEER 14 to SEER 20 saves about $905 a year. At island electricity prices, the extra cost of an efficient inverter system often pays back within a few years.
How we calculated this
Power draw (kW) = tons × 12,000 Btu/h ÷ SEER ÷ 1,000. Cost = kW × hours × rate. Rate: GlobalPetrolPrices.com, household electricity price (includes fuel cost charge, taxes and fees), September 2025. Island rates change with fuel prices, often monthly, so check your latest bill: divide the total by the kWh used to get your all-in rate. Cooling hours are our estimate for the climate.
