Quick answer
At Trinidad and Tobago's residential electricity rate of TTD 0.420/kWh (about 6.20¢ US) as of June 2025, a typical 3-ton air conditioner (SEER 14) costs about $0.16 per hour, $38 for a month at 8 hours a day, and roughly $478 a year (TTD 3,240) with year-round cooling (about 3,000 hours). That rate is 66% below the U.S. average of 18.31¢/kWh, and ranks #8 of 8 among the Caribbean countries we track.

About electricity in Trinidad and Tobago
Power in Trinidad and Tobago is supplied by Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC). Trinidad and Tobago generates its power from domestic natural gas, which is why its rates are among the lowest in the Caribbean.
Protect the AC you're paying to run
On island grids, outages, brownouts and voltage surges are part of normal life, and each one is a risk to an air conditioner's compressor and control board. A failed compressor can cost as much as a new unit, so a few inexpensive precautions are worth it:
- Voltage protection on every unit. A plug-in or hard-wired voltage protector cuts power when voltage goes too high or too low, then waits before restarting.
- A whole-house surge protector at the panel, installed by an electrician.
- A restart delay after outages. When power comes back, many units try to start at once; a delay of a few minutes protects the compressor.
- Generator sized for the AC. Compressors draw several times their running current at start-up; ask about a soft starter if you run AC on a generator.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run AC per hour in Trinidad and Tobago?
About $0.16 (TTD 1.08) for a typical 3-ton air conditioner rated SEER 14, at Trinidad and Tobago's residential rate of TTD 0.420/kWh (about 6.20¢ US, June 2025). A 1.5-ton unit, typical for one or two rooms, costs about $0.08 an hour.
How much does air conditioning cost per month in Trinidad and Tobago?
Running 8 hours a day for 30 days, a 3-ton SEER 14 system uses about 617 kWh, or about $38 (TTD 259) at Trinidad and Tobago's rate.
Is a high-efficiency air conditioner worth it in Trinidad and Tobago?
It depends on how much you run it. Replacing a SEER 10 unit with a SEER 16 saves about $251 a year at 3,000 cooling hours, and going from SEER 14 to SEER 20 saves about $143 a year. With low electricity rates, the payback on a premium system is slower, so size and installation quality matter more than the highest SEER.
How we calculated this
Power draw (kW) = tons × 12,000 Btu/h ÷ SEER ÷ 1,000. Cost = kW × hours × rate. Rate: GlobalPetrolPrices.com, household electricity price (includes taxes and fees), June 2025. Island rates change with fuel prices, often monthly, so check your latest bill: divide the total by the kWh used to get your all-in rate. Cooling hours are our estimate for the climate.
